Being an entrepreneur is a difficult life in itself. Your mind is always bursting with ideas to help you take the business forward. But, what about adequate sleep?
Ascertaining that you get a good amount of sleep plays a very important role to determine your overall productivity. In the passing years, the value of sleep has plummeted as self-proclaimed “workaholics“ have started considering this essential body function as wastage of time which could otherwise be spent raking in the moolah. They, however, have no idea how in the long run, it is going to be them who’ll lose. And, lose big.
Entrepreneur or not, you need to make sure that you are getting at least eight hours of sleep every single night. Trust us when we tell you that this will have a very positive impact on your mind and, in turn, on your business. After all, nothing is more active than a well-rested brain.
In this article, we will discuss the most effective sleeping tips for busy entrepreneurs that can help increase their productivity.
Spend Time Creating a Healthy Sleep Schedule
As an entrepreneur, there are high chances that you follow everything as per your schedule. You do so for meetings, calls, so why not for your sleep?
To get started, you need to understand where you are using the time that can allow you to build a sleep schedule and utilize it accordingly. The entire purpose of making a sleep schedule is to ensure you are able to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Now, this slot includes you sleeping and not just being in bed. Keeping this in mind, you need to take into account the amount of time usually taken to fall asleep, which generally is about 15 to 20 minutes.
Create the Perfect Environment for You to Fall Asleep Fast
The only way you can get quality sleep is by making sure you are comfortable before and during the period you are asleep. Firstly, you need a soft, good quality mattress that doesn’t feel like it’s digging into your skin.
Secondly, you need to ensure there is complete darkness when you’re preparing to sleep. It is quite difficult to fall asleep with the light switch on or even when there’s natural lighting in your room. You can also use a sleep mask for this purpose to help you achieve the right sleep atmosphere.
Thirdly, maintain an optimal temperature in your bedroom. It should neither be too cold nor too hot. By following this, not only will you fall asleep quickly, but having a comfortable night’s sleep will help you wake up more active and refreshed the next day.
Keep an Eye on Your Caffeine Intake
While nothing sounds better than a hot, steaming cup of coffee first thing in the morning, drinking coffee at night is what you have to avoid at all costs. Not only will the caffeine keep you up at night, but it will also make you feel tired the next day. You can substitute caffeine with green tea, decaf, or even water if you get that sudden urge.
Squeeze Short Naps into Your Daily Schedule
Our work life is very demanding as it is. But, taking a short nap of around 15 to 20 minutes whenever you can, can improve your cognitive functioning giving you the much-needed break to set the refresh button.
However, you have to keep your naps short. Napping for longer than 20 minutes can make you feel groggy shifting you into REM sleep. Also, try to sneak some sleep before 3 PM to avoid messing with your bedtime.
Don’t Check Your Phone Just Before You Plan to Sleep
This is one common mistake that all of us do. You need to ditch technology and focus on sleeping. No matter how tempting checking your emails or liking that post on Instagram may sound, you need to set aside your phone at least 30 minutes before you prepare yourself to sleep. This will help you fall asleep faster and easier.
You can also create a nightly ritual to encourage your body to associate the tasks you perform with bedtime. For example, setting out clothes for the next day, taking a shower, etc. can be a few common ways to tell your body to sleep. Listening to classical or any relaxing music can also be a great way to prepare your mind to fall asleep. If you listen to rock and punk music, your mind will not be able to remain calm. Instead, it will become hyper and you will become more alert. This is the opposite of the effect that we want.
Shift Your Exercise Schedule During the Night
Most of us tend to exercise early in the wee hours of the morning. Not that there is anything wrong with it but, hard-core exercise will tire your body making it look for rest. This will set the perfect base for you to fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow on your bed. Try to schedule your workouts or do meditation at least three hours.
Having said this, if you end up becoming more alert when you exercise, you should avoid this. This tip is more suitable for people who look for rest after their daily dose of exercise.
So, these are a few tips to help you fall asleep faster, giving you the perfect start to the next day. You have to take care that you do not deviate from the established sleep schedule, and if you do, it should be minimal. Once you do deviate, you may find it hard to get back on track. Hence, maintaining your sleeping routine pattern is important.
If you manage to be successful to get quality sleep every night, within just a few weeks you will realize how getting adequate sleep has given your productivity the necessary boost it needed.
